Turning Malaysia into an Arts and Cultural Hub

Learning to appreciate arts and culture is something that should begin from a young age. Malaysia has a rich cultural heritage that comes from a potpourri of cultures, customs, and traditions. Besides exposure to Malaysian culture, children have much to learn from the classical culture of other countries too.
The country has progressed from an agricultural society to an industrial country with a stable political, economic and social advancement. However, it needs to preserve its identity and encourage the beauty and creativity that the arts bring to society.
Truly prosperous societies don’t only encourage technological advancement but seek to balance it with expressions of ideas, feelings, and beliefs.
Unfortunately, Malaysia has a shortage of teachers trained in the arts and many young students are not keen to teach art, music, design or even physical education.
All children possess some form of talent and creativeness; which can be nurtured and encouraged from a young age. Art, music, and culture, teach creative thought, develop fine motor skills, develop visual-spatial skills and build self-confidence. Students learn to understand to also be accountable for their contributions, whether they are a failure or are successful.
All of the above contribute to problem-solving and critical thinking skills which allow for thinking out-of-the-box.
The education system in Malaysia needs to re-focus on the importance of all aspects that make for well-rounded students that understand the importance of technology but who have other choices available to them if they don’t fit into that category.
There are opportunities for talented students to seek careers in advertising, animation, fashion and furniture design, fine arts, graphic design, performing arts, and photography and to make meaningful contributions and innovations toward the economy and turning Malaysia into a cultural hub

Those old days workers were brought into Plantation sectors by the British as the locals refuse or reluctant to work in harsh conditions like  thick jungle , malaria , poor sanitary conditions. However the British to boost the economy they had to rely on this workers from India China etc.

A similar situation has arisen now where there is a shortage of labor in the plantation sector and now the Indonesian, Vietnamese  and Bangladeshis  are refusing to work because of better working conditions in urban sites. Plantations are suffering from lack of labor to harvest the fruits and the government is obligated to meet their demands as the country is heavily dependent on palm oil for economic growth.

The minister met plantation owners in a forum and a request was made by some of the plantation owners if Malaysia could take in African labor to  meet the shortage in Malaysia.
All major plantation companies like Sime Darby etc, have invested in Africa in oil palm plantations and Africans are employed there.

As a Human Resource Minister YB Kula in a diplomatic manner answered that this suggestion would be considered.

The Disconnect in Students’ Skill Sets and Employers’ Expectations

higher education and skill sets gap

There is no doubt that Malaysian universities equip students with theoretical knowledge.

Unfortunately, deep comprehension in the field chosen to study does not always equal the ability to apply the knowledge into real work situations.

Malaysia universities need to better equip students so that they can become problem solvers in their places of employment. Until recently, the system had its shortcomings with students spending far longer hours in lectures and tutorials. This system spoon-fed students without giving them the tools to become problem solvers.

As opposed to the education systems of other countries, Malaysian students have three times the amount of lecture hours and are guided through the whole curriculum. In Australia and Britain, the onus is on the students to work through their course.

The introduction of the Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint (2015-2025) ensured that several initiatives were introduced to redesign an education system that would produce work-ready graduates.

Two of the main initiatives are proving very promising in alleviating the gap between student knowledge and employer expectations.

iCGPA – The Integrated Cumulative Grade Point Average is an assessment system that assesses students’ knowledge, social responsibility, communications, leadership &teamwork, entrepreneurial & problem-solving skills, and work ethics. Since 2018, universities are also integrating big data and learning analytics into the framework to also prepare graduates for the gig-economy.

2u2i - This is the program that was introduced to prepare students for the workplace. It stands for two years university and two years in the industry, and since its introduction, students get the opportunity to work in some of the top Malaysian and International companies.

Malaysia is proving that it can alleviate the disconnect between students’ skill sets and employer expectations.

Apprenticeships programs will be reduced as the gap between Industry and Colleges keep reducing

Apprenticeships and Industry 4.0

The old ways of learning are becoming less relevant as focus on practical skill training in skill building institutes and colleges is increasing.  Many time, Industry recruiters found that the apprentice course is not a competency-based. Rapid changes are happening in the Industry and required competencies due to increasing as-as a result of automation, or what is referred to Manufacturing 4.0 &  ‘Industry 4.0’  are not being addressed. Companies and employers are becoming increasingly competitive and global in their operations. In the employment market, there has been a long‐term shift in employment in even in Malaysia, from primary, manufacturing industries towards service focused industries, in fact, moving to a 'gig' economy, that undermines the traditional apprentice and full-time employment.

Apprenticeships involve the employment and training of workers, in the context of particular occupations; and generally, supported by management and oversight by local governments. They are likely to be affected more by these new challenges of ‘future work’ than are other forms of employment or of training; This could also become a direction for government policy-making including its regulation as well as the shaping of required funding for these programs.

Future work developments are now discussed across global platforms since disruptive technologies are already adopted. We also have to accept the new changes and adopt the way we learn to how our economy grows. Things are always changing and if you’re not committing to change, many other problems might arise at times. What you want to do is to focus on growth and improve the best way that you possibly can. Once you start adapting and adjusting the situation, nothing will stand in your way, and the payoff alone can be very helpful.

Apprenticeships and training are not going to last for a very long time because they require you to stay near someone that already knows the craft. People are very busy, and they don’t have the time to tutor you. That’s why learning online and digital learning, in particular, might be able to help you. The gap between industry and colleges is reducing. And with Industry 4.0 and the reliance on AI, you finally get to understand what matters and how you can tackle everything in a way that it works super well. Of course, there will be situations where you will need to manage and improve everything so that it works adequately. However, at the end of it all comes down to commitment and implementing a solution that works for you. It’s definitely not simple to try and be competitive in the current age, but you have to try at the very least.

And the best part is that once you learn more and more, you can immediately customise everything and adapt to the desired industry requirements. Apprenticeships are obsolete because they end up teaching you the same thing over and over again. With the new wave of learning, your focus has to be on customisation, implementing new ideas and trying to find ways to make this work with competancies required for the organisation. It’s one of those things that might seem simple at first, but it ends up with issues. It’s a good idea to know what you are getting into and what you can expect.

As long as you understand the fact that apprenticeships and training won’t work for Industry 4.0 and beyond, you will be fine. Your focus has to be on finding better and more comprehensive solutions all the time. Nothing is more important to focus on growth and value, and the payoff will be good.

Make sure that you implement everything properly and constantly focus on success if possible. That’s why you need to focus on digital and comprehension skills regardless of the industry. Implementing AI in just about everything in our lives is changing the way we tackle numerous industries. But it also comes with signs that growth and value are impressive and it will pay off well if you do it adequately. Start acquiring new skills and you are bound to appreciate the great value and focus you receive from all of this!

Earning a degree is a critical step in anyone's life. However, there are at times, students are dropping out at a high level. A lot of people end up getting jobs even if they are dropouts. Applied science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program in traditional high school settings to help dropout students to get back to in track with the academic STEM courses.

Rest assured that with the best set of opportunities, it will be quite easy to bring in the success and value you always wanted.

What matters is improving your skills.

Which means even as a dropout, the chances are very high, if you are skilled and you can obtain a good job. But you have to make the most out of STEM style education. That can be very demanding at first, but in the end, it will be worth it. This all comes down to implementation and the way everything is handled. Communication is critical because you want to be a good listener; you need to be ok with public speaking, presentation as well as persuasion and other related skills. The more you start focusing on this and improving them, the better the results.

Leadership

You will learn a thing or two about leadership from time to time, but the reality is that this is one of the Soft Skills you have to acquire on your own. Microlearning can help a lot with this. Leadership is a very complex topic, but you have to focus on things like delegation, conflict management and resolution, decision making, delegation, dealing with disputes, and so on. All the little things matter, so try to keep those in mind properly, and the payoff will be great.

Critical thinking

Another one of the crucial Soft Skills you need to have is critical thinking. If you want to get better and better at the way you work and also how you work with others, critical thinking is the way to do it. This allows you to innovate, solve problems, focus on the desire to research and learn a whole lot more. And from here to reaching success in everything you do will be a single step.

How to save job loss due to automation?

Whether Manufacturing or Banks, automation is a necessity. The fact is companies who did do innovative ways in automation has emerged, and long stood, and those turned away, could not survive during the last recession.  So organisations are going ahead with automation such as Robotic Process Automation ( RPA)  and AI. The inclusion of AI in many businesses will bring in job loss. Whether we accept it or not, this technological transformation will happen, and it’s mostly related to how fast and reliable AI can be. Unlike people, AI doesn’t have to rest, nor will it make mistakes. That fundamental process makes it a much better option than people in general. But how can you save your job from automation?

Design the best product

The good idea is to focus on designing the product a stage which is above manufacturing. You want to make sure that the design still allows a true focus on human input. RPA and

AI is being used to automate tasks, but the design needs to be implemented by humans. Otherwise, it just won’t work the way you want. That is why we should push the boundaries and find a way to implement and use this in a professional manner. Social innovations and their designs that help society and touch our lives will have a high impact.

Can we do something?

Yes, we can focus on those jobs that need creativity and which are always going to be very important in our society. AI will and should be used only for menial tasks. Repetitive tasks that require a lot of attention that will be automated with the AI. However, there are tons of creative jobs that need to be worked on adequately, and the payoff alone can be amazing.

We have to understand that job loss can be challenging, and we need to push the boundaries and actively find a way to make these things work. Adaptability is key, so we should try to use that to our advantage. These fears are very tricky and demanding, but you will see that fearing stuff like this will only make things worse. What you want to do is to find a way to enhance your career — upgrade skills for the future.

What jobs are safe?

Jobs such as human resources managers, scientists, sales and marketing managers, PR, chief executives, event planners, software development, writers, editors and graphic designers cannot be replaced. Some repetitive task process can be automated, but who defines the process? All the process is designed by we the people only. What you have to think is that even if some of these jobs might seem to be easy to replace, they are not. They are crucial for society and we need to find a way to adapt them to our requirements. That will not assure that things will always be easy. They will be incredibly challenging, and the only thing that you can do is to make everything work.

Will there be challenges in the long run? Yes, because the AI evolution is evolving and very hard to pinpoint or plan anything. There will be impending problems as we try to adapt to the new age. But the fact is that as long as you are the best at what you do, not a lot will change. What you need is to focus on having patience and finding ways to make things better. If you do that adequately, the payoff will be amazing, and you will not have to worry about automation related job losses!

Upskilling retirees for a successful second innings

Upskilling retirees

When are you retiring? Which year will you be retiring?  These questions often come across from friends and relatives, when a senior is about to retire. Once you retire from your job and reach a certain age, you might think that the options are limited. But that’s not the case. What you want to do is to show that you do trust the system and you are willing to upskill and work hard to make it work. But at the same time, these things also help remove challenges, adapt to the learning experience and make it a lot better as a whole. Of course, there are bound to be challenges along the way, so what you want to do is to focus on adapting and improving that, then it will be worth it. especially, when industrial revolution 4.0 and manufacturing 4.0 is in place, upskilling has become a necessity.
Retirees might not have a lot of patience to acquire new skills, but getting that is a priority for them. It will bring in some amazing results, and the best part is that they can be ready to tackle new challenges.
The Malaysian job market does encourage retirees to gain new skills, and that alone is more than enough to let them at least give this a shot and check it out for themselves. Even if it might sound a bit challenging and hard at first, the potential will be worth it.
So yes, it’s a good idea for retirees to try and improve the way they work. It is always necessary to push the boundaries and find a way that adapts and adjust to the process as you go along. It’s definitely worth the effort, as long as the retiree never stops learning. Once that happens, the payoff will be amazing, and you will be incredibly happy with the process!

4 traits of a smart entrepreneur

Walt Disney: “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”

An entrepreneur is a person who sets up a business taking on financial risks. He or She takes responsibility for overcoming challenges, earns all laurels of success or suffers when it fails. The word entrepreneur is from the French language. This word was first used by the renowned French Economist Jean Baptiste in the year 1800. He identified an entrepreneur as one who undertakes a business, particularly a contractor, acting as a middleman between labour and capital.
Fundamentally, entrepreneurs are individuals who initiate a brand-new company or thoughts and implement it by the plan until it becomes a success story which may be embraced or copied by others.
There are many traits and skills that a successful entrepreneur can be identified. Time management, Communication, Curiosity. Confidence and Motivated. However, I feel there are four that are significantly associated with a successful entrepreneur.
Self-motivation:
This is one of the specific character traits that make an entrepreneur a successful entrepreneur. For a successful entrepreneur, he or she must possess certain unique traits that are a prerequisite for the success of the enterprise.  Self-motivation is the most important traits, and they will be driven to achieve the utmost in any project until they accomplish. Occasionally it can take a short time to get an idea to be adopted or to sell to the intended clients, but at other times, the entrepreneur has to wait a little bit longer before your idea is accepted.

Have we eliminated child labour?

child labour

Though it's a desirable target, the fact remains that there are still cases of child labour in Malaysia and across the globe. Some will say any socio-economic situation; it is practically impossible to eliminate child labour. One can't dispute the fact that some companies harness kids by paying them less than what they'd pay in mature. The future of these working kids is destroyed. They are not going able to get basic literacy, or attend schools and become educated for a better future. But when if someone believes the financial compulsions of the families that force the kids to work, then complete elimination of child labour will be a distant dream. But we have Laws that are made to protect kids from exploitation.

Recognizing the injury caused by child labour to our society, we have laws and amendments. To make it simple. Anyone who employs children aged below 15 may end up spending five years behind bars. Under the amendments, we have brought penalties or fines from a minimum of RM5,000 to a minimum of RM50,000.
Jail terms were also increased from a one-year minimum sentence to at least two years, with offenders liable to face a maximum of five years' jail. The amendments also define hazardous work relating to the handling of machinery and the working environment.

Labour is an impossible task from the current socio-economic situation; our government is committed to professional training, supplementary nutrition and rehabilitation to the kids who're withdrawn from employment. Our government is committed to the task of making sure that no kid remains illiterate, hungry and without healthcare. The new amendments cover against exposing children to hazardous chemicals, dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, noise and vibration.

By the current thinking, countries, societies and we individuals must stop imports of these goods that involve child labour in their production. Business to Consumer eCommerce portals should check the sources of the products. Example: Toys, Carpets. Still, in the world, a lot of children have been used to make these luxury carpets. These carpets that are being exported and sold might soon lose their market overseas if the producers of those carpets persist with child labour. These families who send their kids to work, and they do not think that they are ruining the future of these innocent kids.

Skills gap, a problem for employers

The fear of job losses in the labor market is something that is worrying employees in Malaysia. Their major source of concern stems from the need for them to take advantage of digitalization and the opportunities that are opening up with the technological advancements and the introduction of new innovations.
Graduate Skills
Malaysia has become a digital hotspot with a competitive job market. Meanwhile, on completion of their tertiary education, many graduates find that they are lacking in the technical skills required to fill employment positions. Unemployment is a problem for them. Positions are often filled by employees from abroad and it’s obvious that a shift is needed in learning methods.
Learning techniques at universities require rote learning, this is helpful in remembering information, but allows no room for practical experience.
These shortcomings in the education system are being addressed by supplementing the knowledge with skills through additional government funding.
Employee Skills

Companies in Malaysia are filling their requirements for highly skilled workers by encouraging their workforce to up-skill while also offering incentives and career progression opportunities.
Besides hiring people from abroad, Industry also encouraging Malaysians to repatriate and bring with them the knowledge gained abroad.
In conclusion, our employers can play a major role in creating a competitive advantage for their organizations by providing relevant training courses to accelerate the skills they require from their workforce.

Make Malaysia a Global Design Hub in products designs and prototypes.

The need for Malaysia to maintain its international competitiveness requires that it plans ahead. Its industries, whose past reluctance to adopt new technologies, have now adopted a new attitude that is driving the demand for specialized job candidates.

The thought process that encourages a country to excel and innovate in design is not only focused on creativity, but is a process that demands thinking out of the box to ensure products designs and prototypes to attract international attention.

Slow adoption of skill-sets requirements

Malaysia has seen a huge increase in the demand for UX and UI design professionals, especially front end developers with strong design instincts.

Unfortunately, the candidates to fill these job positions are few and far between, caused mainly by the slow adoption of these technologies.

Improving employee skills

One of the solutions to the problem is for companies to hire individuals with learning potential rather than looking for the necessary skills. People with learning potential can be trained on the job and through upgrade skill courses. This will not only help in faster developments, but is also a worthwhile investment.

Young people already in the job market should seek self improvement by continuously upgrading their skills in order to ensure that they are a step ahead.

In order to become a global design hub, Malaysia will have to encourage business to change mindset and young school leavers to consider tech design studies. This interest can be sparked at school level by the strong development of research, problem solving, collaboration skills, communication and digital design from a young age.

Addressing the skills gap in Malaysia

The new age industrial revolution in Malaysia, or otherwise Industry 4.0, was initially frowned upon in the fear that it would reduce the need for workers.
Addressing the skills gap
This fear is proving unfounded as technological advancement is driving the need for a skilled staff force. Manufacturers are increasingly relying on Industry 4.0 to increase their productivity. This entails the use of data, cyber systems and cloud computing and the trained workforce to work side-by-side with these technologies.
It is expected that across the globe there will be an increased demand for human staff in manufacturing, despite the fact that many positions in the manufacturing line have been replaced by automation. This is something that was previously also seen during the Industrial Revolution.
Creation of new work opportunities for employment
Opportunities are opening up at all levels and departments for skills to support the new technologies. These include machinery operators, vehicle drivers, camera operators and workers will need improved mathematical and analytical abilities. Other career opportunities include AR/ VR, utilizing blockchain, 3D printing, and all opening up job opportunities across all departments, including production, engineering, sales, marketing and managerial.
The manufacturing industry will have to ensure that its workforce are trained, skills upgraded and ready to fill the new role expected of them. This can be done by concentrating on giving existing staff the training need to be re-skilled or by recruiting a new workforce that has the required skills.
It is up to the Malaysian manufacturing industry to ensure the creation of a productive “21st century workforce”.
