Turning Malaysia into an Arts and Cultural Hub

Learning to appreciate arts and culture is something that should begin from a young age. Malaysia has a rich cultural heritage that comes from a potpourri of cultures, customs, and traditions. Besides exposure to Malaysian culture, children have much to learn from the classical culture of other countries too.
The country has progressed from an agricultural society to an industrial country with a stable political, economic and social advancement. However, it needs to preserve its identity and encourage the beauty and creativity that the arts bring to society.
Truly prosperous societies don’t only encourage technological advancement but seek to balance it with expressions of ideas, feelings, and beliefs.
Unfortunately, Malaysia has a shortage of teachers trained in the arts and many young students are not keen to teach art, music, design or even physical education.
All children possess some form of talent and creativeness; which can be nurtured and encouraged from a young age. Art, music, and culture, teach creative thought, develop fine motor skills, develop visual-spatial skills and build self-confidence. Students learn to understand to also be accountable for their contributions, whether they are a failure or are successful.
All of the above contribute to problem-solving and critical thinking skills which allow for thinking out-of-the-box.
The education system in Malaysia needs to re-focus on the importance of all aspects that make for well-rounded students that understand the importance of technology but who have other choices available to them if they don’t fit into that category.
There are opportunities for talented students to seek careers in advertising, animation, fashion and furniture design, fine arts, graphic design, performing arts, and photography and to make meaningful contributions and innovations toward the economy and turning Malaysia into a cultural hub

Those old days workers were brought into Plantation sectors by the British as the locals refuse or reluctant to work in harsh conditions like  thick jungle , malaria , poor sanitary conditions. However the British to boost the economy they had to rely on this workers from India China etc.

A similar situation has arisen now where there is a shortage of labor in the plantation sector and now the Indonesian, Vietnamese  and Bangladeshis  are refusing to work because of better working conditions in urban sites. Plantations are suffering from lack of labor to harvest the fruits and the government is obligated to meet their demands as the country is heavily dependent on palm oil for economic growth.

The minister met plantation owners in a forum and a request was made by some of the plantation owners if Malaysia could take in African labor to  meet the shortage in Malaysia.
All major plantation companies like Sime Darby etc, have invested in Africa in oil palm plantations and Africans are employed there.

 As a Human Resource Minister YB Kula in a diplomatic manner answered that this suggestion would be considered.

The Disconnect in Students’ Skill Sets and Employers’ Expectations

There is no doubt that Malaysian universities equip students with theoretical knowledge.

Unfortunately, deep comprehension in the field chosen to study does not always equal the ability to apply the knowledge into real work situations.

Malaysia universities need to better equip students so that they can become problem solvers in their places of employment. Until recently, the system had its shortcomings with students spending far longer hours in lectures and tutorials. This system spoon-fed students without giving them the tools to become problem solvers.

As opposed to the education systems of other countries, Malaysian students have three times the amount of lecture hours and are guided through the whole curriculum. In Australia and Britain, the onus is on the students to work through their course.

The introduction of the Malaysian Higher Education Blueprint (2015-2025) ensured that several initiatives were introduced to redesign an education system that would produce work-ready graduates.

Two of the main initiatives are proving very promising in alleviating the gap between student knowledge and employer expectations.

iCGPA – The Integrated Cumulative Grade Point Average is an assessment system that assesses students’ knowledge, social responsibility, communications, leadership &teamwork, entrepreneurial & problem-solving skills, and work ethics. Since 2018, universities are also integrating big data and learning analytics into the framework to also prepare graduates for the gig-economy.

 2u2i - This is the program that was introduced to prepare students for the workplace. It stands for two years university and two years in the industry, and since its introduction, students get the opportunity to work in some of the top Malaysian and International companies.

Malaysia is proving that it can alleviate the disconnect between students’ skill sets and employer expectations.

The old ways of learning are becoming less relevant as focus on practical skill training in skill building institutes and colleges is increasing.  Many time, Industry recruiters found that the apprentice course is not a competency-based. Rapid changes are happening in the Industry and required competencies due to increasing as-as a result of automation, or what is referred to Manufacturing 4.0 &  ‘Industry 4.0’  are not being addressed. Companies and employers are becoming increasingly competitive and global in their operations. In the employment market, there has been a long‐term shift in employment in even in Malaysia, from primary, manufacturing industries towards service focused industries, in fact, moving to a 'gig' economy, that undermines the traditional apprentice and full-time employment.

Apprenticeships involve the employment and training of workers, in the context of particular occupations; and generally, supported by management and oversight by local governments. They are likely to be affected more by these new challenges of ‘future work’ than are other forms of employment or of training; This could also become a direction for government policy-making including its regulation as well as the shaping of required funding for these programs.

Future work developments are now discussed across global platforms since disruptive technologies are already adopted. We also have to accept the new changes and adopt the way we learn to how our economy grows. Things are always changing and if you’re not committing to change, many other problems might arise at times. What you want to do is to focus on growth and improve the best way that you possibly can. An entrepreneur is a person who sets up a business taking on financial risks. He or She takes responsibility for overcoming challenges, earns all laurels of success or suffers when it fails. The word entrepreneur is from the French language. This word was first used by the renowned French Economist Jean Baptiste in the year 1800. He identified an entrepreneur as one who undertakes a business, particularly a contractor, acting as a middleman between labour and capital.
Fundamentally, entrepreneurs are individuals who initiate a brand-new company or thoughts and implement it by the plan until it becomes a success story which may be embraced or copied by others.
There are many traits and skills that a successful entrepreneur can be identified. Time management, Communication, Curiosity. Confidence and Motivated. However, I feel there are four that are significantly associated with a successful entrepreneur.
This is one of the specific character traits that make an entrepreneur a successful entrepreneur. For a successful entrepreneur, he or she must possess certain unique traits that are a prerequisite for the success of the enterprise.  Self-motivation is the most important traits, and they will be driven to achieve the utmost in any project until they accomplish. This motivation should occasionally be on the point of being an obsession. When he sets goals to be attained, they must be accomplished at any cost. There's nothing that may be achieved without someone breaking a sweat.
Hard Work & Visionary: 
Another character trait of an entrepreneur is which he must work hard to achieve his goals. Working off your socks and putting the eyes on your prize is your only way to come out efficiently as a businessman. To adopt a business idea and work to execute it to fruition, a person has to be a visionary. This is a significant character trait of an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur must be farsighted and create if laying the groundwork for his idea. This way, he or she focuses on the broader and overall picture of your idea to be implemented, and your vision brings your passion, which drives the successful execution of the initiative.
Another character trait of an entrepreneur is that he's to be a strategist to execute properly an idea which has fermented well in his mind. Have we eliminated child labour?

Though it's a desirable target, the fact remains that there are still cases of child labour in Malaysia and across the globe. Some will say any socio-economic situation; it is practically impossible to eliminate child labour. One can't dispute the fact that some companies harness kids by paying them less than what they'd pay in mature. The future of these working kids is destroyed. They are not going able to get basic literacy, or attend schools and become educated for a better future. But when if someone believes the financial compulsions of the families that force the kids to work, then complete elimination of child labour will be a distant dream. But we have Laws that are made to protect kids from exploitation.

Recognizing the injury caused by child labour to our society, we have laws and amendments. To make it simple. Anyone who employs children aged below 15 may end up spending five years behind bars. Under the amendments, we have brought penalties or fines from a minimum of RM5,000 to a minimum of RM50,000.
Jail terms were also increased from a one-year minimum sentence to at least two years, with offenders liable to face a maximum of five years' jail. The amendments also define hazardous work relating to the handling of machinery and the working environment.

Labour is an impossible task from the current socio-economic situation; our government is committed to professional training, supplementary nutrition and rehabilitation to the kids who're withdrawn from employment. Our government is committed to the task of making sure that no kid remains illiterate, hungry and without healthcare. The new amendments cover against exposing children to hazardous chemicals, dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, noise and vibration.

By the current thinking, countries, societies and we individuals must stop imports of these goods that involve child labour in their production. Business to Consumer eCommerce portals should check the sources of the products. Example: Toys, Carpets. Still, in the world, a lot of children have been used to make these luxury carpets. These carpets that are being exported and sold might soon lose their market overseas if the producers of those carpets persist with child labour. These families who send their kids to work, and they do not think that they are ruining the future of these innocent kids.

The need for Malaysia to maintain its international competitiveness requires that it plans ahead. Its industries, whose past reluctance to adopt new technologies, have now adopted a new attitude that is driving the demand for specialized job candidates.

The thought process that encourages a country to excel and innovate in design is not only focused on creativity, but is a process that demands thinking out of the box to ensure products designs and prototypes to attract international attention.

Malaysia has seen a huge increase in the demand for UX and UI design professionals, especially front end developers with strong design instincts.

This entails the use of data, cyber systems and cloud computing and the trained workforce to work side-by-side with these technologies.
It is expected that across the globe there will be an increased demand for human staff in manufacturing, despite the fact that many positions in the manufacturing line have been replaced by automation. This is something that was previously also seen during the Industrial Revolution.
