Tamil schools have a long and proud history in Malaysia. They have nurtured generations of students, preserved the beauty of the Tamil language and culture, and contributed to the socio-economic development of the Indian community.

It is on us to assist them, however possible.

I am pleased to contribute RM5,000 to 10 Tamil schools (SJKT) each from the Manjung district in Perak amounting to a total sum of RM50,000.

We are all aware of the many challenges that Tamil schools face—from limited infrastructure to a lack of resources. It is hoped that this monetary aid will assist in addressing some of these challenges.

In a handover ceremony held at SJKT Pangkor attended by Tamil school headmasters, teachers, parents, and students, I took the opportunity to record my appreciation for the hard work and dedication of all Tamil school principals and teachers in nurturing the young. Their public service and commitment to education is very much seen and appreciated.

In addition, I also spoke on the importance of preschool education. Preschools are the building blocks of a child’s education journey, enabling children to be better prepared for primary education. Underscoring the importance of preschool education, under the 13th Malaysia Plan, the government is also considering making preschool education mandatory in the country. In this regard, all SJKT in the country should aim to offer preschool education within the next 2 - 3 years.

While we prioritise education, it is also important to ensure the health of our children. According to UNICEF, 20.7% of children under five in Malaysia suffer from stunting and 11.5% from wasting, 12.7% of children (5–19-year-olds) are obese. Teachers in our schools must also therefore take the initiative to speak to parents—who may not know—to prioritise providing healthy and not just filing food to their children. Meals must be balanced and eaten moderately. Without good health, even with good education, success will be hard to achieve.

On a closing note, in speaking to the students of SJKT Pangkor later on, I told them that above all else, what matters is to believe in themselves. Study hard, dream big, and crave success.
