Thaipusam With The Communities

Today, as is customary during Thaipusam, I walked from our Ipoh Barat Thaneer Panthal, engaging with the public, listening to their concerns, and discussing local issues. Following this, I proceeded to the Gunung Cheroh Murugan Temple alongside the Ipoh Barat team, where we met with YB Sivanesan Achalingam, the Perak State EXCO, and other dignitaries. We were warmly welcomed, garlanded, and participated in prayers.

Thaipusam is a sacred and significant day for Hindus. After the prayers, we were given the opportunity to address the public. YB Sivanesan underscored that the sale and consumption of liquor at Thaipusam procession locations is strictly prohibited—a decision in line with preserving the sanctity of the occasion.

During my speech, I emphasised the vital role of temples in not only serving as places of worship but also as centers for continuous religious education. Temples should take proactive steps to inculcate good moral and religious values among devotees. This effort must be sustained to ensure the community benefits from proper spiritual guidance.

I also highlighted the substantial financial allocations provided to temples by both the federal and state governments, as well as contributions from Members of Parliament and state assemblymen. While millions have been allocated, there is still more to be done. Transparency, accountability, and a greater focus on uplifting the B40 community should be key priorities.

Furthermore, I urged temples to engage in ongoing discussions with local communities to better understand and address their needs. Strengthening this dialogue will ensure that temples continue to play a meaningful role in community development.

Thaipusam is not just a festival; it is a time for reflection, renewal, and reaffirmation of our values. Let us work together to preserve the sanctity of our religious institutions and ensure they serve the community effectively.
