I held a video conference with H.E. Dato’ Zakri Jaafar, the High Commissioner of Malaysia to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
This evening, I held a video conference with H.E. Dato’ Zakri Jaafar, the High Commissioner of Malaysia to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The purpose of the call was to discuss the recent convictions of two Malaysian students, Teo Jia Xin and a minor, in the United Kingdom for murder and attempted murder, respectively. Both individuals have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
During the conference, I received an update on the present status of both cases and the assistance provided by the High Commission of Malaysia in London. I also explored potential avenues for further support, particularly in the area of legal aid, for these students. I will continue to engage with their families to facilitate discussions and ensure that they receive the necessary assistance.
I also wish the emphasise the importance of promptly informing the Malaysian High Commission, Embassy or Consulate if you are ever detained overseas. This ensures that our authorities are aware of the situation and can provide appropriate consular and legal aid.
I understand that there may be instances where individuals or their families may be hesitant to disclose their detention due to embarrassment or fear of publicity. However, it is crucial that such situations are addressed promptly to facilitate the necessary assistance.
If you find yourself in such a circumstance, please do not hesitate to contact the Malaysian High Commission, Embassy, or Consulate for support. They are there to assist.
