MALAYSIAKINI : Take action against restaurant for firing worker over cross, Kula urges govt

PARLIAMENT | Former human resources minister M Kulasegaran today urged the government to take action against a restaurant operator who fired its worker for wearing a necklace with a cross.

In his speech at the Dewan Rakyat this evening, Kulasegaran (Pakatan Harapan-Ipoh Barat) said the country has laws that specifically deal with religious discrimination in the workplace.
"Recently, there was an employee who got sacked because he was wearing a necklace with a cross, which is a religious symbol.
"Has the government taken any action on this? Because as far as I remember, there is a specific provision in the Employment Act for (the government) to take action.
"If the government has yet to take action, they should do it as soon as possible," he said.
The DAP MP was debating Budget 2024 Bill at the committee stage in regard to the Human Resources Ministry.
Act before it gets worse
Adding further, Kulasegaran told the Dewan Rakyat his concern that such discrimination would spread in Malaysia should the government fail to address the issue.
"Race and religion are big issues. I fear that one day employers might take issue with their workers putting white ash on their foreheads.
"Not only that. Maybe one day workers won't even be allowed to wear their cultural outfit like saree," he added.
Two days ago, Mon Chinese Beef Roti Restaurant reportedly fired its employee after a video showing the person wearing a crucifix had gone viral on social media.
One video questioned whether the bun restaurant was trying to deceive its patrons because the staff in question had the necklace on despite wearing a songkok.
