Meeting with Minister of Justice of Laos, His Excellency Mr. Phayvy Siboulypha

I concluded a working visit to Vientiane, Laos yesterday where I met and held a productive discussion with H.E. Mr Phayvy Siboulypha, Minister of Justice of Laos. This bilateral meeting was held in conjunction with Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN this year.

Our discussions were fruitful, exploring potential collaborations to further strengthen legal and institutional reform cooperation between Malaysia and Laos.

We also exchanged views on the proposed Joint Statement by ASEAN Law Ministers to be signed at the ASEAN Law Forum 2025 in August this year and discussed international developments in the field of international commercial arbitration and mediation. A key focus of our meeting was to explore how ASEAN can collectively enhance the use of arbitration in commercial disputes and position the region as a trusted hub for effective dispute resolution.

We also spoke about other areas for potential legal cooperation such as enhancing online safety and legal protection for children and child witnesses.

In concluding the meeting, I formally invited H.E. Mr Phayvy Siboulyphato to the ASEAN Law Forum 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, a platform to reaffirm ASEAN’s commitment to justice, legal cooperation and economic integration through strong and resilient legal institutions.
