1. I refer to an article on the Scoop news portal dated 2 February 2025 where it was reported that Zakir Naik addressed a crowd at the Perlis International Sunnah Convention 2025 in Kangar, Perlis. The report states that Naik remarked Malaysian Mulims were not using the law, which allows Muslims to propagate Islam to non-Muslims, to its full extent.
2. I have questioned Zakir Naik’s presence in Malaysia as earlier 2017. It was then admitted by the government that he had been granted a permanent residence in this country. The basis upon which it was granted, remains unknown.
3. Zakir Naik has in the past made public statements which have caused dissatisfaction among non-Muslims. After severe outrage across the country, the Royal Malaysian Police in 2019 announced a nationwide ban on Zakir Naik from delivering any public address in the interest of national security and maintaining racial harmony.
4. Following his public address on 2 February 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Royal Malaysian Police must clarify the status of this ban. In this regard, I welcome Home Affairs Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution’s comment earlier today that he will check on the status of the ban. There must be immediate clarity on this matter of public importance.
5. Malaysia is a united and harmonious country with different races and religions. We have continued to live in such fashion for over 67 years. We cannot, and must not, allow our national unity, harmony and security to be compromised––by anyone.
