Media Statement - Situation in Bangladesh

The recent situation in Bangladesh involving increased incidents of harm against members of the Hindu community and desecration of Hindu places of worship in the country is most concerning.

These incidents not only jeopardise the safety and well-being of minority communities but also risk the fundamental values of harmony and inclusivity that are essential to society.

Decisive measures must be taken immediately to address and end these troubling acts of violence with those responsible held accountable.

In any multicultural society, there will be challenges as people from different backgrounds, beliefs, and traditions come together to coexist and build a nation. These differences can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or tensions. But it is essential to bear in mind that this diversity is not a weakness—it is a source of strength. Differences should be celebrated, not disputed. Diversity brings together a variety of perspectives, experiences, and skills: all of which collectively contribute to the success of a country. Unity in diversity must therefore be cherished and preserved.

Protecting human rights and preserving the dignity of every individual are universal obligations that go beyond national borders. I sincerely hope to see the situation improve and the tensions come to an end. Let there be peace.
