I held a working visit to the Penang Court Complex in George Town.
In attendance were YB Lim Guan Eng (MP Bagan), YB Senator Dr. Lingeshwaran, YB RSN Rayer (MP Jelutong), YB Kumaran Krishnan (ADUN Bagan Dalam), YBrs Puan Nik Nasimah (Registrar of the High Court of Malaya), YBrs. Dato’ Mohd Nasir (Director of the Penang State Courts), Puan Vijayalakshumi and other representatives from the Penang Bar Committee.
This working visit sought to monitor the progress of the Penang High Court Restoration and Upgrade Project and to facilitate dialogue between the courts and the Penang Bar on issues faced by lawyers in Penang in relation to court facilities across the state.
Several issues were raised such as the location of the Bar room at the heritage High Court building, parking within the court complex for disabled lawyers and more pressingly, the increasing workload of criminal matters as there is only one High Court assigned on the island to hear criminal cases.
We had a productive discussion on the above today and I will be following up on the issues raised with the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court and the Registrar of the High Court of Malaya.
