Malaysian woman in custody in Nepal

-----------------------------------

I met with Project Liber8 recently, a local human rights NGO, to discuss a rather unfortunate case.

I was made to understand the following.

The case brought to my attention is one of a Malaysian Indian lady who married a Nepalese man and moved to Nepal. Over the course of the next 10 years, she was exploited through domestic slavery and prevented from interacting with the outside world. She eventually escaped but was later detained and sentenced to an approximate RM89,000 fine or 7 years imprisonment. She is at present serving the prison sentence in Nepal.

This is a truly unfortunate situation. We will try our best to assist by coordinating with the victim’s family, the Ambassador of Nepal in Malaysia, our Minister of Foreign Affairs and our Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

This case is also a reminder to always be cautious when moving overseas in such situations.
