I attended the inaugural meeting of the Committee for Implementation of the Law and Institutional Reform Agenda today chaired by Deputy Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusoff. The meeting was attended by YB Dato’ Sri Azalina Othman Said, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) and other senior government officials, including the Director-General of the Public Service and the Solicitor-General.

This committee has been established by Cabinet to ensure that law and institutional reforms in the country can be implemented at a speedier pace considering various challenges and viewpoints to achieve consensus in these areas.

We discussed the establishing of an Ombudsman Malaysia — a new institution to address maladministration within government and to ensure this institution is sufficiently empowered to make a difference. Further, we also discussed amendments to the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 to strengthen the country’s whistleblower protection framework in our fight against corruption. Both these law and institutional reforms are slated to be brought to Parliament by the government at the end of the year.
