Importance of a mentor for your career growth

mentor

A mentor is someone who is ahead of the road I want to follow. If I want to become a wrestling superstar, I will be talking to Dolph Ziggler or Big Show. If I wanted to become a Tennis Player, Roger Federer or Nadal would be my first choice. If I wanted to become a footballer, Maradona or Rafael Silva would seem appropriate sports mentor for me. A mentor is someone who has already realized what you want to be and who can convey.

No doubt Maradona passes on his knowledge and experience to a few people. But in his case, as in that of any mentor, it is necessary who wants to transmit. You do not become a mentor in some way.

The mentor is there to enlighten you, show you the next step you must take to move forward. He makes you benefit from his experience. Sometimes from his network so that you move faster than if you had been alone. He brings you his know-how and his know-how.

The mentor is not necessarily an older man who seeks to transmit a legacy in a burst of worry about what will remain of his stay here. It is, on the contrary, someone active in the same field as you. The mentor is, however, often in the process of transmission as much as in the process of assistance.

I think a good mentor is someone who wants to reveal your potential and see what he can do for you.

Purpose of a mentor

To have a guide, a model. When we are children, our parents are often our role models. Later, it is up to us to choose ours. This principle has existed since the beginning of time!

Imagine walking in the dark, and all you can see are your feet. The mentor will be your lamp, and he will light a few meters in front of you. It will not allow you to make the same mistakes as him. It will make you aware of a more significant number of possibilities, and it will help you to overcome it.

Are the mentor and coach are same?

We may also tend not to distinguish between coach and mentor. If the approach is similar, several points fundamentally differentiate these two categories.

The coach

First of all, the coach is asked to solve a particular problem. For example, "I wish to win back my case in the court, I want to get into the top 10, I want to lose 15 kilos ..."

Often, the coach is a paid service. It is not a figure who wishes to transmit for the pleasure of doing so but of a person whose professional activity it is.

The mentor

The mentor tends to provide support over time. Often over several years and always for free or in exchange for the right relationship. What motivates you is to see how far you can go and if you will get past it.

Where the coach is going to tackle a particular problem in a short period, the mentor will focus on supporting you over time. From a certain point of view, the two are complementary. A mentor is someone who has lived through all the situations you will face when it is not necessarily the case for a coach. For example, I know a team of entrepreneurs in the software industry who receive the advice of a reputable tutor in the sector but who also call on a coach when it comes to developing a new contractual aspect and that there are challenges.

In their relationship, coaches and mentors may also have differences. The coach is preferably positioned on the fact to make you find your solutions, whereas the mentor is often more directional. The mentor-mentee relationship is more with personal aspirations from both the ends. It is common for a mentor to abandon a person who does not implement what is advised while the coach will be more persevering. Whether sports mentor or business coach, this difference is only a generality that will, of course, depend on the personality of the coach or mentor.
