PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal here has set Aug 19 to hear three challenges against the quashing of the conversion of kindergarten teacher M. Indira Gandhi’s children to Islam by her former husband.

Justice Mohd Hishamuddin Mohd Yunus fixed the date specifically to hear the case, and instructed the registrar to set aside other matters.

The panel, which included Justices Mohd Zawawi Salleh and Umi Kalthum Abdul Majid, will hear three appeals filed by Indira’s former husband, Mohd Ridzuan Abdullah, the Federal Government, the Perak state government, as well as three other parties.

Indira’s counsel M. Kula Segaran told reporters the main grounds of the appeals would be over Article 121(1A), and whether the civil court could question a syariah matter such as conversion.

He clarified that custody of the children was not part of the appeal, and that the Ipoh High Court had set May 30 to decide on the contempt matter against Mohd Ridzuan for failing to hand over their youngest child, six-year-old Prasana Diksa, to her mother.

Senior federal counsel Noor Hisham Ismail, who appeared for the Federal Government and the Education Ministry, said they were appealing to settle the issue of whether the children should take Islamic studies or Moral studies.

Lawyer Hatim Musa represented Mohd Ridzuan, while SFC Norazura Mohd Moktar acted for the Perak state government, the Perak Islamic Affairs Department director and the Perak Registrar of Converts.
