Press Statement
It is imperative that at the Perak Ordinary State Convention to be held tomorrow, Convention delegates must rise to the occasion and prove to our supporters that they want and will elect a united and capable Perak DAP team to lead the party into the next general election.
The unexpected heavy defeats of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) candidates at the recently concluded Galas and Batu Sapi by elections came as a big shock to many Malaysians, especially PR supporters.
We knew from the beginning that both by elections would be very tough for PR but we nevertheless believed that there was a chance that PR could at least retain the Galas state seat.
The defeats did not shock us but the big majorities secured by Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates were a real shock to us.
The big majorities obtained by the BN candidates must mean that Chinese support which has not swung back to BN since the 2008 general election has now started to drift in BN’s direction.
Some political analysts have written that the by election results could spell troubles for PR in the next general election strongly speculated to be held within 6 months.
Hence, these two by elections must serve as timely wake up call for the PR and the PR leadership Council will have to quickly devise new strategies to win the people’s support and confidence.
The new Perak DAP state leadership will have very heavy responsibilities in that it will have to , together with our PR comrades, ensure the PR’s twin electoral objectives of recapturing Perak state power and to march towards Putrajaya.
Hence, it is imperative that at the Perak Ordinary State Convention to be held tomorrow, Convention delegates must rise to the occasion and prove to our supporters that they want and will elect a united and capable Perak DAP team to lead the party into the next general election.
Let’s prove to our supporters that there is only one team in the Perak DAP, that is, the Perak DAP team. Let tomorrow’s party election results show that there is room and role for every capable leader in the team.
