We knew right from the start that Batu Sapi by election was going to be very very tough for Pakatan Rakyat (PR) candidate.
We knew too that it was not easy for PAS to retain the Galas state seat.
But the heavy defeats took us by surprise.
The heavy defeats of PR candidates in the Galas and Batu Sapi by elections must serve as timely wake up calls for PR.
There is a Chinese saying that
“The water supporting a boat can also make it capsize (
水能载舟,亦能覆舟).Lets always bear in mind that the people can support us, they can also abandon us.
PR leadership Council will have to conduct a thorough post mortem to identify the reasons for such heavy defeats.
I am particularly surprised at the drifting away of Chinese support in Galas as this is the second state seat where there was such a strong swing against a PR candidate.
There was a significant Chinese swing in last year’s Bagan Pinang by election in Negeri Sembilan.
In the Hulu Selangor by election where Datuk Zaid Ibrahim was defeated, there was a swing of Malay and Indian voters away from PR.
Hence, the swing of Chinese votes against PR in Galas is worrying.
PR will stand to lose many parliamentary and state seats if the Malay, Indian and Chinese do swing away from PR in the next general election.
In fact, there could be a possible political tsunami against PR.
However, all is not lost as we will have some time
to re-organise, re-invent and re-strategise our political approach and policies to win over lost ground since it will be at least a few more months before a snap polls will be held.
PKR lost in Ijok by election in April, 2007, but PR scored an unprecedented electoral success in the 2008 general election.
Let’s work harder to ensure that PR’s electoral objective of “March towards Putrajaya”will become a success in the next general election.
Deepavali signifies the victory of light over darkness. There must be more light in this beautiful country.
I call on all Indians and all other Malaysians to unite to shine the light of justice, freedom and solidarity and to bring about a better Malaysia for all Malaysians in the next general election.
