MIC Deputy President Datuk G. Palanivel completely lost face in the Hulu Selangor by-election when he was not selected as the Barisan Nasional candidate despite having been the only candidate proposed by his own party.
Not only is he the former MP for Hulu Selangor for 4 terms till he was defeated in the 2008 general election, he is also the heir -designate to MIC president, Dato Seri Samy Vellu. Yet, he had to give way to a young an lightweight MIC candidate.
His non selection was humiliating for himself and MIC. It was a big blow to his and MIC's credibility too.
But yesterday Palanivel had dealt a further blow to his credibility when he accepted backdoor entry to Parliament.
Although he had dismissed rumours that his appointment was a consolation for being dropped as the Barisan Nasional's candidate for the Hulu Selangor by-election, there were already media reports even before polling day about his planned appointment as a senator and deputy minister .
Hence, his denial will not have much credibility.
Immediately after the 2008 March general election, Datuk Seri Samy Vellu openly declared that he would not accept a senatorship because he did not want a backdoor entry into Parliament. He said that the voters of Sungai Siput had decided and he accepted their decision.
How could Palanivel be a credible MIC president when he was so willing to enter Parliament through backdoor entry while his President had openly rejected the idea of becoming a backdoor MP and Minister?
